![]() A huge unconnected world (that added nothing to gameplay) but no ability to dig or build up.Īs for the direction of Gnomoria. Yup - When I first played DF it didn't even have Z levels. Originally posted by Doctor_Moriarty:Dwarf Fortress, for the longest time, generated an expansive world and didn't really use it. The big thing is that DF has been worked on for 9 years as of last month, while Gnomoria has only had only about a third of that time worth of development going into it. He has done everything for the game other than the art and music, similarly to ToadyOne for DF. Oh, and also, in your second point you worded it in a way to imply that there are multiple developers for Gnomoria. Gnomoria doesn't have to go to quite that extent, but it would be nice to have our own scenarios to play with. Or I could've started on a frigid glacier by the ocean with a horrific and evil climate with just the barest essentials to survive. I could've started in a peaceful forest with lots of trees ripe to be harvested with a ton of flux stone, hematite, and bituminous coal just under the surface. The one thing I really liked about DF was being able to start with a scenario I wanted. I think one thing that can go a loooooong way to making the game feel more open is - instead of generating whole worlds - allow choice of various scenarios at the player's choice. ![]() That isn't to say that Gnomoria is without its faults. Gnomoria is a game, and as such it tries to keep things as simple as possible while still giving as much depth of gameplay as possible. Gnomoria doesn't need this rediculous level of complexity because - as a game - it has just as much depth that Dwarf Fortress does. and then as I played I realized something. "I don't get to generate a new world? Just a simple map? Laaaaaaame". I immediately saw the lack of complexity and was somewhat startled and put off. I had the same issues when I came over here. It just needs solid mechanics and fun gameplay.Īnd I really think that is what gets a lot of people who come from DF over to Gnomoria for the first time. It doesn't need an expansive, randomly generated world with a rediculous level of randomly generated lore. It doesn't need things such as temperature tracking or realistic metal ore. They're similar but are both made with different design concepts in mind: DF is made with the goal of being an accurate fantasy simulation while Gnomoria just wants to be a fun game. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Gnomoria and DF are two completely seperate things. That is what makes it stand on its own so that it isn't " just another DF Clone". DF is no longer a game, it is a Genre, and who says Gnomoria isnt the first to do it Gnomoria honestly doesn't need a large expansive world and it really doesn't need all the complexity of DF. a GREAT game, EXTENDING (not copying) the likes of a game, that i consider to be one of the greatest and underated created games of all time, fall short of a goal that could make Gnomoria the ROGUE of its genre, because that is what it is. If this is something that has been brought up (possibly many times), then i apologize. What i mean by this is Lore, Secrets, More "fine tuning" of individual gnomes, and of course, a much larger, more "living and breaathing" world. So great, let GNomoria come out in another four years, but with something "in the background" and "solid, COMPLEX, and intricate" game mechanics. (continued.) lets be honest, You are not super worried about the timeline from start to release of your game. We NEED more cosmetics, NEED more politics, NEED a 4x strat side to this game. But we need alot more of whats "outside" the Gnomoria Home. ![]() You are not the only ones to make a game, that stems from the ideas of DF, yet i would say you are THE alternative to DF. That "Large" map needs to be a single square of a MUCH, MUCH (dare i say again.) MUCH larger world.Ģ) Many have tried, Many have failed!. The first and foremost is BACKGROUND/WORLD.ġ) Stop the availability of walling off the (entirely) too small maps!. HOWEVER, we are missing some key ingredients that make this game just " a DF clone" or a stand alone, mark of its genre, game called Gnomoria. As a DF refugee, Gnomoria lightly scratches an itch that anyone who knows what "DF" stands for, can attest to.
